My Writing Process

I like to think that my foot is already through the door to the college writing world, and I’m proud of that. I’m glad I’ve been warmed up to the idea that every essay does not need to be a 5 paragraph system; introduction, body, conclusion. Also, I may have already found my voice. To those, I thank my AP Lang class once more. It was preparing for the AP essays that taught me that the thesis can be in the final paragraph. It was writing arguments that allowed me to speak through my words, not as an academic drone, but as a person.

My biggest shortcoming, though, is my writing speed. I write in short bursts, sentence by sentence, with a long pause between them as I struggle to put words on the page. This leads me to take hours just to finish a draft. I know I could write badly and edit it later. But I just can’t bring the words from the back of my mind onto the page.

By the end of this course, I hope to learn to write quickly. I also hope to improve upon my strengths. Just because I’m familiar with the nonlinear format of college writing doesn’t mean I’m used to it. Similarly, my voice could shine brighter through my words with more practice. With time, I hope to grow in all aspects of writing.
